If they pay examiners a flat rate they can only go so far with discounting before their profit margin is gone, so I believe it forces them to push for raising the rates.

If this was the case and this is the way underwriters look at policys, if exminers were familiar with codes they would cut out the coders job, who by the way don't make bad money .

Its not unheard of that you are provided a name and number and expected to turn the prospect in to an actual sale/exam. Although learning to medical billing codes would require a certification which can be done on line for about $800 and takes about 3 to 4 weeks to complete. I would also like to add, I personally think exam companies "realize the threat" of a certified network of examiners that Insurance Companies could choose to use directly for their services. That's why all the changes lately, look around PC's are in scramble to show the insurance companies...

I have been a contracted examiner for close to 9 years now:) I truly enjoy what I do but do feel very taken advantage of by the PC's I contract with. The last 2-3yrs have been progressively worse more tasks less pay. Which is why I was so excited about the NASCPE and the opportunity's that may arise...
